Democracy is a terrible system because it has a fatal flaw:
It treats every oppinion as equal. The expert and the ignorant get the same vote. An uninformed citizen holding the same power as a statesman is a recipe for disaster. Popularity will always win, truth will always lose.
If you are sick, you don't hold a vote on your treatment; you find a doctor and ask him. Letting crowds decide complex political questions are just as absurd. Skilled orators replace skilled thinkers, and feelings replace facts. Democracy rewards performance, not wisdom. Talented speakers will manipulate the crowd using fear, ego and comfort. They promise simple answers to complicated problems.
Charismatic frauds will always outperform honest experts in a popularity contest. Incompetent people make bad decisions - and in a democracy, they make those decisions for everyone. The system hands power to the loudest voice, not the sharpest mind.

Ron Hubbard built a global corporation out of his delusions, while John Norman's acolytes are forced to enforce theirs on a digital grid of pixels.
