Hardship, suffering, difficulty, pain. These are the forces that burn away the impurities of the soul. Death is not a sign of weakness, nor is bodily constitution a sign of strength. It is what happens to one's soul when brought into the fire of pain that determines the mettle of men; whether they are forged by the flame and become stronger or are weak, brittle and turn to ash.
