Female gladiators, known as gladiatrices or ludia, were unusual female warriors in Ancient Rome who fought in the arena, mainly during the High Empire. Although rare, these women—either slaves or free individuals seeking fame and money—challenged gender norms by training and fighting, often bare-chested and without helmets, provoking both fascination and social disapproval.
