David Marshall was a professor of Ancient History at Oxford, until he was transported to the planet Gor by the Priest-Kings: to be reunited with his long lost father William Marshall, and trained as a warrior and a Jarl.
After a series of adventures, serving his Home Stone, Captain Marshall, and his crew on The Black Herlit, were betrayed while on a mission hunting Kurri in the Vosk Delta, and subjected to an horrific experiment, designed to undermine the very basis of Gorean society: a serum that will ensure gorean men can no longer count on remaining male after suffering capture and defeat.
Transformed into women, the crew of The Black Herlit were sent to work as kajiras for the Cu Sith gang in Port Kar, where David Marshall was renamed Bosk, on account of the breadth that she had retained in her shoulders, her large udder-like breasts, and the septum-ring with which she was fitted.
Here Bosk served as a tavern-slut, until she was rescued by her father William Marshall, who had heard strange rumours concerning the fate of the Black Herlit. He brought what was left of his son to the women's city of Tharna... Here his son lives as a freewoman called Lady Telima Marshal..
Appointed as Librarian of Tharna (a belated return to her scholarly past), Telima seeks to track down her scattered crew and to regain her status as a man and warrior, by pleading her case with the Priest Kings she served.
Like her fellow crewmates, Telima remains enthralled to the craving for sex and submission that afflict ninth-generation slaves - although she resist this, in order to retain her status as a noble-born and freewoman.
